Elementary Summer Sessions: What to Expect

MANH’s Summer Sessions are the perfect time to go in-depth with some of our areas of expertise and interest. We do our best to put together lessons that are equal parts informative and fun. Here is what you can expect from each Elementary session:

Session 1:
Medieval Studies
Love dragons, nights, castles, and jousting? Then join us for a fun-filled session as we study Medieval Times together. We will learn about the different countries and people that made this era so famous. We will study the weapons and culture around knighthood, learn about castles, read medieval stories, and learn about the people and the land that existed between the ancient civilizations and our modern world. This will include many arts and crafts sessions as well as historical studies.

The Solar System and Beyond
Do your kids love space? Do they have all the planets memorized, including all of the dwarf planets? Or do they not know anything about the star-filled expanse that is our solar system? Well, either way, this is the class for them! We will study all of the objects that neighbor our blue water-filled marble of a planet as well as gaze beyond our solar system’s borders to the nebula filled black void that is the rest of the universe. This class will also include many fun physical activities designed to help our students learn about space!

Swim and Play
This summer we are excited to bring back our swim and play program. Students will travel with a teacher to many parks and splash pads in the surrounding neighborhoods. The class will also include some time at the local pools. Students must be able to swim before signing-up as supervision and space is limited and safety is our primary concern. This class is longer than our standard classes as travel time is involved, so this class will count as two afternoon classes (meaning they will not be able to sign-up for another afternoon class). But, if beating the heat is your goal, this is the class for you!

Session 2:
Bollywood
India is a country which is known for its diverse culture, religions and traditions, among other things. India has 22 official languages, 111 dance forms and because of its geographical diversity, it is also known for its diverse cuisine.

India is quite famous for its multi cuisine and traditional food. India has been widely appreciated for its fabulous use of herbs and spices. The cooking style varies from region to region and is largely divided into South Indian & North Indian cuisine. In this summer session we can learn some basic food from north and south regions of India which adds flavor and spices to your food and keep it healthy at the same time.

Besides the cuisine, India is also known for its classical and folk dances and the Bollywood dance is the combination of all these movements in one place. These dance moves are energetic and fun. Get ready to shake, twist and hop to the rhythmic beats of Bollywood music! Learn just some basic moves and you are ready for the dance party! In this dance session your children will learn the basics of bhangra and garba dance.

Session 3:
STEAM
Students will learn basic Google Applications, typing and Scratch coding. There will also be a host of science demonstrations and experiments over the course of this session.

Session 4:
Scientific Discovery
This session is all about discovering the “how” and the “why”. Throughout the two weeks, we will perform experiments together as a group, as well as individual experiments. From egg drops and rocket making to building boats that float, we will explore the scientific method using observation and critical thinking skills. We also plan to spend time outside at various parks, nature preserves, and water parks to soak up the summer.
