Creating Together: Erdkinder Explores Textiles
This month, our Erdkinder artists explored textiles as both a functional material and a form of decorative art. In the studio, students experimented with fabric, denim, felt, and yarn, learning how sculptural forms and collage emerge through cutting, layering, stitching, and binding. Some students transformed worn denim into textured landscapes and animal studies, while others sculpted soft shapes or designed tactile objects inspired by pattern and color. Textile work invites patience, problem-solving, and attention to detail, and our students embraced the challenge with creativity and care.
Earlier this year, we shared the beginnings of a weaving project in the hallway at Freeman East. That collaborative tapestry is now nearly complete, with elementary students adding colorful strands of yarn whenever they have a quiet moment. The slow, rhythmic motion of weaving invited focus and reflection, and each student’s small contribution added strength and beauty to the whole. It has been meaningful for the class to take part in a piece that grows through shared effort.
