Celebrating Diversity: International Day
BY SARA MOTLAGH, HEAD OF SCHOOL
On March 1st, our school community will come together for one of the highlights of our year—International Day! This vibrant and joyous celebration showcases the rich cultural diversity within our school community and the world around us. From traditional attire to culinary delights, the day is a beautiful reflection of our shared humanity and the connections that bring us together across cultures.
Since our founding in 1989, International Day has been a way for our students and families to embrace and learn from one another. What began as a small in-classroom event has grown into a gathering of nearly 400 people, reflecting the warmth and spirit of our expanding community.
Rooted in Montessori principles, this celebration encourages children to explore the world with curiosity as they develop a deep respect for others and an awareness of our profound inter-connectedness. By experiencing different cultures' traditions, languages, and stories, we develop a deeper appreciation for the many ways people live, celebrate, and express themselves. International Day is a time to celebrate who we are, where we come from, and how we can build a world that welcomes and values every culture.
Opening Ceremony
The celebration begins with a vibrant parade, where our youngest students and their parents proudly wear traditional attire representing different countries. As each child carries a flag from a different country, we are reminded that our school is a tapestry woven from many cultures, each contributing something beautiful and unique.
Cultural Performances
Throughout the morning, students will take the stage to share traditional and modern dances from various parts of the world. These performances, brought to life with dedication and enthusiasm, showcase the talents of our students and the incredible support of our teachers and parent volunteers.
Culinary Adventures
No International Day would be complete without the much-anticipated international food potluck! Families prepare dishes from their cultural backgrounds, transforming the atrium into a global feast. From Italian pasta to spicy Indian curries, from Japanese sushi to Mexican tacos, everyone will have the opportunity to savor flavors from different parts of the world.
International Art Display
This year, students will showcase artwork inspired by Latin American traditions, offering a glimpse into the region's vibrant colors, history, and creativity. Art, like food and music, is a universal language—one that allows us to connect across borders and generations.
Building a Sense of Community
International Day is a celebration of more than just cultural traditions—it’s a celebration of community. By coming together to honor our unique heritages, we strengthen the bonds that unite us and inspire future generations to embrace inclusivity and the richness of diversity.
We invite all our family and friends to join us on March 1, 2025 at 9:30am at Willow Creek Community Church. Let’s come together to celebrate the world within our school!
