Concurrent Enrollment for Erdkinder Students at Harper College

One of the amazing opportunities offered to Upper Erdkinder students at MANH is concurrent enrollment at Harper College. Through this program, students who are ready for an advanced college curriculum can enroll in a class at Harper College where they earn both high school and college credit. This year, two upper students, Nozomi Kato and Eli Nelson, are taking two different courses at Harper. Eli is taking Environmental Laboratory Science, and Nozomi is taking Child Psychology.

The Environmental Laboratory Science class meets twice a week for a lab and lecture. Every week, the class goes over a new chapter and concept involving environmental science. During the lab period, students use the scientific method to conduct experiments and measurements on microorganisms and plants. They then record their observations in charts and fill in worksheets. Once they are finished with the lab and lecture, they write a journal entry about the key concepts they learned in the lab and take a quiz about what they learned in the lecture.

The Child Psychology class meets for an hour twice a week in a classic lecture hall style and covers a different chapter each week on various topics related to child development. So far, the focus has been on the relationship between genetics and environment, prenatal development, and the effects of parenting. The class requires a great deal of independence as most of the work is done online and outside of class. Therefore, this class teaches not just lessons in child psychology but also in the time management skills necessary for higher education.

Both of these classes allow for enriching and challenging educational experiences for upper students. Through this class, both of us are learning about new things we are interested in at a more advanced level. This experience is also giving us a taste of what college is like, which helps us prepare for our futures. At MANH, we are very grateful for our partnership with Harper College and what it allows students like us to accomplish. The MANH community is also very proud of Nozomi and Eli (and the many other students who preceded them) for their achievements at Harper.
