School of Rock: Building Confidence & Collaboration
AN INTERVIEW WITH SCHOOL OF ROCK’S BARBARA LEWIS
This year, MANH students have taken their music education to the next level through a unique partnership with Barrington School of Rock. Under the guidance of General Manager Barbara Lewis and a talented team of instructors, students have explored music and performance by becoming members of a band. We caught up with Barbara to learn more about what our students have been working on—and what this experience has meant for them.
What've the MANH students been learning at School of Rock this spring (2025)?
MANH students at School of Rock have been diving into some great music—and learning much more than just how to play songs. From vocals to instruments, they’ve been working hard, having fun, and growing in their skills.
10th through 12th graders chose a setlist that even surprised me–with a few new favorites now on my own playlist! They’ve been rehearsing Own My Mind by Måneskin, Psycho Killer by Talking Heads, and Too Sweet by Hozier.
4th and 5th graders are rocking out with Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes, Island in the Sun by Weezer, and Radioactive by Imagine Dragons.
7th, 8th, and 9th graders are rehearsing a mix of powerful tracks Creep by Radiohead, Zombie by The Cranberries, Rockin’ in the Free World by Neil Young, and Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes.
Across all grade levels, students are not only learning music—they’re also developing skills like teamwork, communication, and the confidence that comes from performing together on stage.
What do you enjoy most about your work with Barrington School of Rock?
What I enjoy most is watching a student go from having little to no experience to confidently taking the stage. There's something incredibly rewarding about seeing their growth—not just musically, but in their confidence and sense of self. It’s a powerful transformation, and being part of that journey is what makes this work so meaningful.
What can families look forward to at the performances on Sunday, May 18, 2025?
Families can look forward to seeing the incredible results of their students' hard work and dedication. These students rehearsed just once a week, and many don't even have instruments at home to practice when not at the school—yet they've put in the effort, learned to collaborate, and are ready to take the stage. Sunday’s performances will be a celebration of their progress, passion, and perseverance.
