STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Michele Novelli

Michele Novelli
Assistant Head of School

What led you to become an educator?

As a child, I always loved school and admired my teachers. They made me feel supported, challenged, inspired, and cared for. By high school, I knew I wanted to become a teacher or work in education in some way, so I could help others become lifelong learners and make a positive impact on the world. I’ve always been drawn to helping children navigate their learning journeys and pursue their dreams with confidence and curiosity.

After completing my education, I taught second grade in a public school for about five years before taking time off to raise our children. In 2011, we enrolled our son and daughter at MANH after being inspired by the beauty and intentionality of the Montessori approach. Soon after, I was invited to consider teaching at the school. I completed my Montessori training for Lower Elementary and had the joy of teaching alongside Mrs. Motlagh for three wonderful years. Those years deepened my understanding of Montessori philosophy and let me witness the magic of learning unfold every day.

Until recently, I served as the Site Director at Huntington for nine years, an experience that allowed me to connect with families, support teachers, and help shape the school’s warm and collaborative culture. This year, I’ve stepped into the role of Assistant Head of School, a new chapter that continues to inspire and challenge me in all the best ways.

What do you love about working at MANH?

There are so many things I love about working at MANH. I’m surrounded by an incredible community of people who are kind, supportive, and dedicated to creating a nurturing environment where children can grow and thrive. It’s inspiring to be part of a place where genuine connections are formed, not only among colleagues but also with the families and children we serve.

One of my greatest joys is observing the natural curiosity of children as they explore the world around them. Watching their discoveries, guiding their learning, and playing even a small role in their journeys is a privilege. Those “aha” moments, when understanding lights up their faces and confidence blooms, remind me why I do what I do. It’s in those moments that the heart of our mission truly shines.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at school?

When I’m not at school, I love spending time with family and friends, whether we’re cheering at local sports events, enjoying meals at neighborhood restaurants, or sharing good coffee and conversation at a local café. I have a deep appreciation for the creativity and talent in our community, so I often find myself supporting local artists and small shops, especially in Elgin.

Travel is another passion of mine. I love exploring new places but also find comfort in returning to familiar favorites like Saugatuck, Michigan, a place that holds many cherished family memories. If I could, I’d spend endless days by the beach or near a lighthouse, soaking in the calm sounds of the water and sky. Moments by the shore, where time seems to slow and everything feels lighter, remind me to stay grounded, grateful, and open to life’s simple joys.
